Spring Reading Thing

I've got books on the brain. Too many, in fact. I need to get them under control. There are just too many to read, I don't know if I'll ever get to all the ones I want to read. So, I feel the need to give myself a challenge. And Katrina at Callapidder Days has a Spring Reading Challenge that I am going to participate in.

And while I have my own book list, I'm not going to follow it, per se. This challenge will be about me finishing up all those half-finished books by my bedside.

So, here's my list:

The Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne (founder of "The Simple Way" community)
Don't Waste Your Life by John Piper (...three-fourths finished)
Dumbing Us Down by John Taylor Gatto (..halfway finished)
Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy by Kevin Bales (for a Social Issues book club)
Writings of A Deliberate Agarian by Herrick Kimball (...one-fourth finished)
Becoming the Woman of His Dreams by Sharon Jaynes (my husband really likes me reading this ;)
Let My People Go Surfing: The Education of a Reluctant Businessman by Yvon Chouinard (the story of the Patagonia clothing company--a great model of a company that runs its business by its beliefs--my husband is reading it now)

Happy Reading! Are you up for the challenge? Let me know and I'll come over and see what you are reading!

Yes, great list, Andrea! I really like John Piper, but haven't yet read Don't Waste Your Life. It looks really good, though.

Thanks for joining the challenge!

Your list contains books that are all new to me, except for Dumbing Us Down. I haven't read it, but I hear it's good. I might have to add it to my TBR pile. Enjoy the challenge!

I have recently committed myself to reading through the original Charlotte Mason series. Since the books belong to the library I have to read at least one every four weeks! So, perhaps, six months from now I'll be done ;)
I plan to post quotes and summaries on my blog for each book.

I've heard of John Taylor Gatto through a homeschool group I'm in, but have yet to read his stuff. I'll have to check him out.

Oh, Dumbing Us Down is a real eye opener. I also enjoyed the Deliberate Agrarian. Will be anxious to hear your views on both and perhaps a review on the others that will make me want to add them to my year long list.

I've enjoyed Piper. We used to go to the Patagonia garage sales they would have in Ventura at the factory. Those were the days!

I've been reading your blog for several months now and I truly enjoy it. There are several on your list I've wanted to read but haven't made it to my pile yet: Piper, Gatto, Kimball. They look so good! I also have you to thank for introducing me to Fernando Ortega. I love his music and am enjoying his latest CD.
Blessings

Have you read Better Off: Flipping the Switch on Technology by Eric Brende? Judging from you list, it may be a book you'd enjoy :-).

Andrea--I LOVED your blog, just from the name, before I even clicked over here. After looking around, I completely am confirmed in that. Stepping Heavenward is also one of my very favorite books.

I've wanted to read Don't Waste Your Life as well.

Hopefully I'll remember to come back again soon!

Andrea, I'm glad your social issues group is reading my book Disposable People. I published that back in 2000 as the first deep study of the modern slavery problem. I'm writing because in September I will publish a new book that focuses on the solutions - it is called Ending Slavery: How We Will Free Today's Slaves. Maybe for your book group next year?

Meanwhile, if you haven't seen it I would recommend the film Amazing Grace.
Best wishes,
Kevin Bales

I'm part of the same challenge and wanted to stop over and check out your list. Looks quite impressive! I would love to hear what you think of "Don't Waste Your Life". That seems to be my mantra these days. :)

Enjoy!

Irresistable Revolution was one of the best books I read last year. I gave it to my son for Christmas. We're both re-reading it and figuring out what it's means in our own lives.
